Hi I have a X Terrier who is around 2 and a half. I found a tiny lump near his back leg a couple of months ago and took him to the vet. She put a needle in it and advised that from what came out it was a cyst. It has got a little bigger since which she said may happen but still small about 5mm just under the skin. I'm going to take him back to get it checked again and just some guidance. Should i ask for tests at this point or trust it is just a cyst in which case should it be removed? Just wanted to check before i go back. Many thanks.

Hi Lexibear,

It is quite possible that the small lump is a cyst. However, fine needle aspirate cytology ('putting a needle into it') does have its limitations, and may not be as accurate in providing a correct diagnosis when compared with a tissue biopsy (submitting a piece or the whole mass). Remember, though, that NO test is 100% accurate.

If the mass is getting bigger (albeit slowly, and it is still relatively small), and it is concerning you, then I would suggest having it removed and sent for pathology. If it is confirmed as a cyst, it will no longer bother your dog if it gets bigger, and you can put your mind to rest!

Thanks so much Amy I agree I believe she mentioned she could remove it and it's quick and easy. I'll keep you posted... Thanks
