Dear all -

My boy Gilbert was recently diagnosed with Osteosarcoma. We went ahead with the amputation almost immediately with no biopsy results as it was a pretty cut and dried diagnosis from the X-ray.

He is doing well 2 weeks post-op. So well, that we have decided that chemo is the ONLY course of action, as there is no obvious spread (although as we know, there are probably micro metastases) and his blood levels are all good.

Unfortunately, Gilly was only insured up to £3K and we are already well over that. We cannot afford chemo, but the thought that we came SO close to helping him and were bound by financing is heartbreaking. We are trying to get Gilly's story out across the globe, and are asking for donations of as little as £1 or (even better and FREE) social media shares.

Please help us.

Thank you xx

I love the greys but this osteosarcoma puts me off. I am hoping in the near future with so many great scientists and oncologists doing different trials they might find something soon so I can get a grey next time. Are you using an oncologist or just a gp vet?

I was not aware that you should not put dogs on a raw diet whilst on chemo. I was told about the carbs when Frodo got cancer but mine have always been on a raw diet and I never changed that even though diet was discussed.

Good luck with Gilbert

Gilbert is the first greyhound I've had to get osteosarcoma, although I know it's one of the more common ailments that tends to take them.

The raw diet thing is just safeguarding on my part. I used to work for a raw-food manufacturer and I would always warn owners with dogs on chemo about the immunosuppression factor, although there is slightly more to worry about with raw poultry based diets rather than beef or lamb.

We are using a GP vet who happens to be best friends with one of the top canine oncologists in the UK Smile So luckily he is seeking all advice through this guy first.

Fingers crossed x

Glad you have an oncologist consulting. Only way to go and I am sure you are glad to have that for Gilbert. We have really good ones in Aus who have done years of training just in cancer. Horses for courses. If I had cancer I wouldnt want my GP handling it I would want a specialist.

Have you done Gilberts swab for the UK Animal Heath Trust? Dr Starkey needs samples to get his research done. Fill out the paperwork and email and they send a kit. Maybe if you have other greyhound friends you could share the link as they also need healthy ones over 7. The greyhound owners around the UK and US have been really supportive of the site and are taking a pro active approach to getting the cancer message out there.
