Aspirin belongs to a class of drugs called NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory's). This class of drugs has been shown to reduce the risk of certain cancers developing in people, but the dose required, length of treatment required, and whether the degree of risk reduction is greater than the risk of side effects, is not known.
Some drugs within this class of NSAIDs have also been shown to be of benefit in the treatment of certain cancers once they have arisen. This has also be demonstrated in dogs, however the drug with the most evidence behind it is called piroxicam. On its own, this drug may reduce the size of some bladder and oral cancers. More commonly, it is used as part of a treatment called metronomic chemotherapy, where it is given in conjunction with a very low daily dose of a chemotherapy drug, with the aim of delaying disease progression rather than shrinking the tumour.
