Hi I would like to take this opportunity to add my comment to this forum if you have any queries about cancer please do not hesitate to request an referral to the specialist before proceeding with any treatments I was advised that the lumps my dog had needed to be removed and if there was any concerns then I would be referred onto the specialist I decided to go to him before having the lumps removed and was glad I did as when he took samples of the lumps and had them tested he advised that they were not cancerous just fatty lumps if I had of just proceeded as recommended he would have been sedated and had to have stitches which was not required please do not hesitate to request the referral if you have any doubts

If you use specialist vets you will be getting the best treatments and advice for your dogs. You have to remember after gaining a veterinary degree, an oncologist has to do many extra years of study only dealing with cancer patients before becoming a specialist. A general vet does not do the extra study in this field.

I have heard of many similar cases to what you describe and many times I have heard of people not being able to get referrals. I would like to think it is a case of the local gp vet not knowing they can refer from the start. It is up to "us" as owners to be aware of our options and stand firm as to what is best for our dogs. I would not be happy either with unnecessary operations.
