I live in Australia but do not want to use the oncologist near me as I have used before and not like. Could I use one from another state and how would it work? Do I just use a local vet and they consult interstate or what do I do?

Thank You

Hi Alicia,

Sorry for the slow reply - I hope you have sought specialist advice for your pet if they have been diagnosed with cancer.

It is unfortunate that you haven't had a good experience with your local veterinary oncologist. Is there something that could be resolved by you speaking with them directly (without any pets involved!)? Often vets are trying to manage many patients at the one time, and an external party may be able to see a better way of dealing with certain day-to-day things.

If your pet has had a diagnosis of cancer, consulting with a specialist oncologist will ensure you are offered the most up-to-date information and treatment options. This is not to say your local general practitioner vet is not a good vet, but they have not had the further training in this specific field, which is constantly evolving.

You can have an initial phone consultation with an oncologist in another state, and depending on the disease and the recommended treatments, the logistics of ongoing care could be decided from there.

Good luck,
Amy
